VMware Server 2 installation on Debian 5 (Lenny)

Today, I would describe in a short tutorial how in a few minutes and steps VMware Server 2.x under Debian Lenny can be installed.
Correct package download
Since VMware Server is basically a free product, it can be downloaded at any time. VMware wants this "know" your data, and some additional information. If you already have an account, can also with his mail address and password login. http://www.vmware.com/download/server/ Last version in my case "2.0.1 Stand: 03.31.2009"
After logging in you views of the different VMware server products. Here we must select the correct version. Since we are using Debian, we need a Linux version, specifically the TAR image. (Marked red in the screenshot)
If your image directly on your Debian (Deskop: GNOME / KDE / xfce) invites, you can it to / usr / save src /. If you can downloaded the image but on a different PC, then you are using SSH (openssh rüberkopieren) rübertransferieren burning to CD or USB stick and on / usr / store src /.
Install dependencies
Before you begin, a few packages (be installed if not yet available):
I'm here to root privileges, if you are not root-privileged, and if you can be "with the command" su.
apt-get -y install gcc cpp make automake autoconf binutils psmisc
apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
VMware Server 2.x, unpack and install
Before the actual installation starts, we need to unpack our tar archive until: (The X stands for the version and need to be adjusted accordingly)
cd /usr/src
tar xfvz VMware-server-2.xxx-xxxxxxx.i386.tar.gz
Now we start the installation:
/usr/src/vmware-server-distrib/vmware-install.pl
After starting the installation script are some questions about installation paths and sources that can be left in the rule as the default, or you change the paths to your liking. In addition, the licensing agreement appears to have to accept her "yes". After the installation is so far gone through, you will be asked for the serial number of your system. You have in your inbox an email in which a link for activation. This link can be found then your specific serial number.
Following screen you should following the successful installation before you have:
the configuration of VMware Server 2.xx build-xxxxxx for Linux for this running kernel completed successfully.
Access the web interface
Since the installation is complete, VMware Server 2.x can be used.
Her you can now connect via a browser on your VMware Server and make other adjustments, and create virtual machines. The web interface it reached at the following URL and login data to be used by the root user:
https: / / ip-of-servers: 8333
Note: The certificate must first be accepted by the browser, so that the page is displayed.
Uninstalling VMware Server 2.x
If you want to remove VMware Server from his Debian system again, who can use the following command:
/usr/bin/vmware-uninstall.pl

VMware Server 2 installation on Debian 5 (Lenny) ...
Today, I would describe in a short tutorial how to install in a few minutes and steps VMware Server 2.x under Debian Lenny can ....
I've been once tried to install, unfortunately without success. Maybe I try it again.
Where was the problem? Maybe I can help somehow
[...] VMware Server 2 installation on Debian 5 (Lenny) [...]
[...] http://www.sysadminslife.com/linux/vmware-server-2-installation-unter-debian-5-lenny/ [...]
Since I had problems, the install archive directly via wget command to load on the server, I have a Bissel rummage in the VMware forum and there found the tip to use the text browser lynx.
Call is made with lynx
Then up to download the VMware durchhangeln package (in between must still log in with their account details)
Download went well
However, I am with the above command:
apt-get install linux-headers-$ (uname-r)
with the error message:
E: Could not find package linux-headers-2.6.18-164.2.1.el5.028stab066.10
kicked out. The attempt to install VMware still claimed:
WARNING: Could not open directory / lib/modules/2.6.18-164.2.1.el5.028stab066.10: No such file or directory
FATAL: Could not open / lib/modules/2.6.18-164.2.1.el5.028stab066.10/modules.dep.temp for writing: No such file or directory
Unable to open kernel module dependency file
Google could give me regarding the lack of help package does not exist.
Does anybody advice?
Hi Nexus,
I load the package usually on my computer and then move it directly over SSH to the server, but the idea with lynx is good!
VMWare requires necessarily the kernel header files, and therefore does not want to install.
You really used to install Debian Lenny? For the installed kernel looks quite as. News comes to Debian Lenny, if I am not mistaken version 2.6.26-* are used. The version installed with you, however, is 2.6.18-*. I recommend therefore essential to update to a newer version.

Jupp, and above all, it is with extreme lynx fix. If I had to upload the lame on my DSL line (135kbit / s upload), then I would have very much patience. With lynx that was within a few minutes on the server.
The design with the kernel is a bit difficult. Since I 'only' a vServer use, so I can not access the kernel of the host. But once I got the support of my agent contacted. Let's see what comes out.
Alternatively, I'll try later times to get an older version of VMware to run ...
I think older versions of the kernel will need headers.
But if you can access the system via SSH (and I suppose, or you could try not perform the installation), then you'd have the kernel or the Debian can update itself.
But whether it is in principle, be effective on a one vhost to run VMware, I question.
Well, we found so far for me not to need me with the whole matter of profound concern and my knowledge is limited to the necessary administrative tasks such as securing the server or the care and support of the LAMP and the FTP server.
As I intend, however, I now rent privately a root, I'm just trying to expand my horizons a little.
The question of the practical benefits of a virtual machine on a server rather I leave it on the sidelines. I'm doing at the moment more to trying out that to learn and to understand the background of what I am doing ...
I like it when someone deals with the matter and would also like to take on Linux base.
I will assemble the next few days a tutorial how to install a Debian system to be upgraded and what all is to be observed.
Good day!
I have a problem with VMServer 2.0 and Debian Lenny.
I can from the outside (ie in my Heimntzwerk) can not access the Windows Guest. Other way but it transpires ...
Gibts to any approaches?
LG
Christian
